Strong, fit and fierce – whats not to love about New Balance ambassador Rachael Finch?!
We’ve been spoilt and had Rachael on FITC blog in the past for our ‘Motivational Meet’ interview (check it out here), and now she’s back sharing her secrets to keeping fit and healthy.
Tell us your secrets and tips to getting a ‘model fit’ body – especially after a baby?
I wish there was a secret to tell! For me getting back into shape after having Violet came down to the simple stuff – healthy food, staying active, sleep, relaxation and all the good parts to life that we need to fit in. I played sport since I was 3 so moving my body comes very natural. I was active right up until birth and made sure I ate good quality healthy food. I avoided processed sugar and rested when I needed. Sometimes it’s hard to achieve the balance but I think that’s the key to staying fit mentally and physically.
What is your go-to workout when you have an hour?
It really depends on how I feel on the day because you can get a lot done in an hour. I could take a yoga class, go for a run or at the moment I love designing my own circuit classes using my own body weight in exercises. I will always incorporate stretching into my workout – I think it’s just as (if not more) important than the workout itself.
What about when you only have 30 minutes?
In 30 minutes I would most likely do a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) session in the park or somewhere close to home. This type of training has short periods of intense exercises with shorter recovery periods. After 30mins you really feel like you’ve done an hour! Fitting in even 30 mins of activity is better than doing nothing and your mood will immediately improve by doing so!
You have a big shoot coming up in 6 weeks – how do you prepare?
6 weeks is a long prep time, there is a lot you can get done! The first step is to clean up the diet and eat simple, fresh ingredients. I don’t eat anything processed or from packets. I include more vegetables into meals and keep my protein sources lean. I like to step up my game when it comes to working out. I try to exercise every day, if not 6 days a week with a rest day on Sunday. I always love planning something with the girls as it keeps the exercise fun and exciting. We love going for a run together or taking an aerobics class!
Secret nutrition tip?
I use a lot of coconut oil in my cooking and on my body. I also take magnesium every day because I do a lot of physical activity and feel my body needs it.
Favourite classes or studios in Sydney?
Hot flow yoga at Hom Yoga in Darlinghurst or a pilates session at Fluid Form Pilates on Danks st.
What is on your hit list to updating your spring/summer workout wardrobe?
I think fitness in the warmer months is about incorporating lightweight apparel, brighter colours, prints, as well as cooling and drying technology. I want to feel the same support from my gear in summer as I do in winter with the freedom to move and sweat it out.
My staples in apparel include New Balance’s Mesh Panel Tank, Impact shorts and The Print Tenderly Obsessive Bra! I love the look and feel of all of these pieces – I’ve got 2 of each of these haha!
